In Mumbai High Tide Warning 24 to 26 July 2009

Heavy rains in Mumbai crippled normal life on Tuesday and the Mumbai city is arranging itself to face high tides from the Arabian Sea. On Thursday, as rains lashed Mumbai, the metropolis faced one of the highest tides of the season that hit its shores. Officials told that the city experienced a high tide of 5.1 metres at approximately 1:23 pm, which had been last till about 7:25 pm.

High Tide warning has been given in Mumbai (Bombay) from 24 July To 26 July 2009 and it may be that Mumbai will have to face the biggest high tide. According to the Maritime Board's predictions, at 2.03 pm on July 24, the tides are expected to rise to 5.05 metres - about 57 cm higher that the high tide on July 26, 2005. Mr Gajbhiye told that during the Monsoon, this year, the city will experience high tide for 22 days.

Air, road and rail traffic has been affected by the heavy rains. BMC has put its staff on alert to counter the effect of high tide and also requested the education department to declare a holiday in educational institutions to avoid terror. The Municipal Corporation has asked locals to stay away from beaches.

To face the situation arising from heavy rain, the Maharashtra Government has chalked out an extensive plan. With the officials to determine the best way forward in dealing with the monsoon, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan held a series of meetings.

In Mumbai, several area like Mulund (242.81 mm), Bandra (207.8 mm), Memonwada (203.1 mm), Byculla (197.3 mm) and Chembur (192.7 mm) had heavy rainfall since 8.30 pm on Monday 20th July.

Warning by the government:

The warning is given by the government to the public that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in ghat areas like Goa and in the districts of Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and in Madhya Maharashtra during next 24 hours. During the same period heavy rainfall is likely to occur in greater Mumbai and over Marathwada and Vidharbha.
