Meet a Man with 39 wives and 94 children

Ziona Chana, the leader of a sect that permits members to take as many wives as they want, is living happy life with his biggest family with 39 wives, 94 children, 14 daughter-in-laws, and 33 grandchildren in the hilly village Baktawng of Mizoram. It may be the largest family in the India and in the world with 167 members. The 66 year old, Ziona Chan’s whole family is living in a 100-room home that is four-storey building named ‘Chhuan’ in the middle of the Baktwang village.

They have their own Carpentry workshops, playground, school, poultry farms, piggery and a vegetable garden. All members of the family are working together and coordinate with each other in household works such as washing, cleaning, and preparing meals. His oldest wife Zathiangi, 69 has responsibility to manage all works in home as the big family requires organization skills and all the members are organized with military discipline. Ziona Chana married at the age of 17 first time and he married to 10 women in single year. There is a rotation system for all wives to visit Chana’s bedroom. And his youngest wife sleeps near to his bedroom. Ngaihzuli Chan is favorite wife of him in the large family.

The evening meal for the family includes 30 chickens, 132lb of potatoes, and 220lb of rice. In the family, all men carry out outside works like taking care of farm animals and farming while all wives cook meal and his all daughters wash the clothes and clean all room. Ziona Chana belongs to sect religion and his polygamous religious sect has 4,000 members. Still he is looking for new wives as he wants to expand their community.
