National Spelling Bee 2009 Winner : Kavya ShivashankarKavya Shivashanka has became a winner of the 82nd Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee final Competition which held on May 28, 2009 in Washington. She won by correctly spelled "Laodicean". The winning word "Laodicean" means that lukewarm or indifferent in religion or politics. Kavya Shivashankar was also winner of the Jack & Jill National Spelling Bee in 2005. Kavya was making her fourth appearance at the bee, having finishing 10th, eighth and fourth over the last three years. She won more than $40,000 in cash and prize and also won the trip to Washington, D.C. Kavya got big hugs from her father, mother and little sister. She is the first Kansan to win the title of champion. National Spelling Bee competitions for English were held in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Indonesia and others. The Competition featured 293 champion spellers, selection in age from 9 to 15. The First runner up Tim Ruiter was eliminated on "maecenas". The second runner-up Aishwarya Pastapur was eliminated on "menhir". In previous rounds, Kavya spelled challenging words like "hydrargyrum", "blancmange" and "baignoire". She likes playing the bicycling, violin, swimming and learning Indian classical dance, and her role model is Nupur Lala. She wants to become a neurosurgeon Kavya father said she might enter the "Brain Bee," a science-oriented contest that should suit her career goal well. "Spelling has been such a big part of my life" said Kavya. In this Competition first she wrote the spell on her palm after then she gave answer, that’s why she became a winner. She is a very intelligent. |
