What began as a protest against the poor has become a mass movement. It is more than just farmers and workers from northern Thailand, take to the streets as the "red shirts" - business people, students and members of the middle class is also rebellion against Thailand's political cultureand influence of the military and the urban elite. They are united in their anger with the current government under Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who was elected not by people but only by parliament - after the questionable machinations of the military. And they are united by a common enemy: the pro-business yellow shirt - an alliance of officials and urban elite, who describes himself as loyal monarchists. |
