Reaction to Jackie Chan's China Comments

Comments made by Hong Kong action movie star Jackie Chan, the Chinese people "need to be controlled," was criticized in the Chinese press, as recently reported his views on 20 April 2009.

Jackie Chan told a business forum on the southern Chinese province of Hainan as a free society can not be beneficial for China's authoritarian mainland. An English-language blog headline: "Jackie Chan is a Know-Nothing Self-Loathing Racist.

The Remarks drew wide comment in the national media with comments criticizing Chan for lack of knowledge about China's current situation. Jackie Chan said on Saturday,"I am not sure if it is good to have freedom or not." He also said, "I have gradually begun to feel that we Chinese should be checked. If we are not controlled, we will only do what we want."

Jackie Chan went on to say that the freedoms in Hong Kong and Taiwan has made those societies "chaotic." "The comments made by Jackie Chan ... shows that he is ignorant about democracy," said a comment on Huamei Website, run by journalists.

Jackie Chan, best known for his martial-arts comedies, told an annual meeting for governments and business leaders on 18th April, that China should be wary of allowing too many freedoms. A Commenting on the news of the government in northeast China said Chan had ignored China's efforts to build the rule of law and improving human life through economic reforms.

Chan Statement is based on the discrimination that the Chinese people can not control themselves and are built on the idea that the Chinese are like a flock of sheep who lack self-discipline and self-restraint. "The Chinese people have stood up and become masters of their nation, we are no longer slaves," the commentary said.
