India's longest railway bridge in Kochi

India’s longest railway bridge will be started in Kochi in the month of November. The engineers are giving final touches to the bridge. The 4.62 km-long Vallarpadam Bridge will beat the current record for the longest rail bridge detained by the Nehru Setu Bridge near Dehri on river Sone in Bihar.

The longest bridge will be connecting the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT). This bridge is part of the railway line for the ICTT. The work was start in May 2007 and is progressing on schedule. The total cost of this project was including the railway station and other important goods yard near here was Rs 245.67 crore.

The bridge is coming up alongside the ICTT are including a Rs. 1,600 crore LNG terminal, International Ship Repair complex Rs.315 crore, Petro chemical complex for Gas Authority of India Rs.7,000 crore, SBM for Kochi Refineries Ltd Rs. 720 crore, and the port-based Special Economic Zone Rs.1,510 crore.

Deputy General Manager G Kesava Chandran, said that It will be the longest bridge built in the shortest possible time of 18 months. The project cost for this mega bridge is estimated to be Rs.295 crore. He also added, The Bridge has 11,000 tonnes of ordinary steel, 3,000 tones of high tensile steel and 36,000 tones of cement have so far been consumed to build the 133 span bridge, which will have 133 pillars.
