The 2009 Atlantic hurricane season is an event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation. The season officially started on June 1 and will be ended on November 30.
The season began early with the development of Tropical Depression One on May 28. On August 12, Bill originated in a tropical wave that emerged from the western coast of Africa and on August 15 bill organized into a tropical depression in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, about 740 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. Bill gained strength slowly on Monday, Aug. 17, was upgraded to a hurricane, with winds of 75 miles per hour. Hurricane Bill churned in the Atlantic Ocean toward the west-northwest as a major Category 3 hurricane on Tuesday evening. Bill remains a major hurricane as of late Wednesday evening, with sustained winds to 135 mph. Hurricane Bill howled over the open Atlantic as a dangerous Category 4 storm Wednesday, and it could be energized by warmer waters as it moves north. The big question is how close will Bill pass to Bermuda and United States. Hurricane Bill update is now a big and strong hurricane with on its way up to 125 mph and nearly 205 km/hr, a big announcement from the National Weather Service today, August 20, 2009. Meanwhile, the US National Hurricane Center projects the storm will continue on a path away from the eastern coast of the United States, but notes it’s too early to tell how close the storm will come to land in New England or Nova Scotia on the coming weekend. Hurricane Bill had a big potential to grow within the next 24 hours and turn toward the northwest.
