Earthquake of 7.1 hit HondurasA powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the northern part of Honduras at a depth of 10 km on May 28, 2009 at 2.24 a.m. Six people were killed and 40 people were injured in this bizarre earthquake at the Caribbean coast of Honduras. The Honduras is a poor country, has 7 million populations. The U.S. Geological Survey said that the quake hit 39 miles northeast of the island of Roatan at a depth of 10 kilometer. The epicenter was 320 kilometers north-northeast of the capital Tegucigalpa. The closest land to the quake was in the palm- fringed Bay Islands which is famed for beaches, coral reefs and diving. Several factories and hotels reported damage and one major highway remains close.The heaviest damage was in the Sula Valley an industrial area with about 1 million residents. Honduras is the world’s ninth-biggest grower of coffee and coffee export industries were safe and sound.
