By winning this event, Anamika Veeramani became the third successive Indian-American to spelling bee champ and the eighth in the last 12 years. In last year's competition, she had also participated but she finished it at an impressive 5th place. At Incarnate Word Academy in Parma Heights, Ohio, Anamika is an eighth-grade student. She said, "It was too surreal. It was an amazing experience. I usually have a poker face, so that's what that was."

In 83rd Scripps National Spelling Bee, second place was a three-way tie between Adrian Gunawan, 14, of Arlington Heights, Ill.; Elizabeth Platz, 13, of Shelbina, Mo.; and Shantanu Srivatsa, 13, of West Fargo, N.D. and in the same round, they were all eliminated. In the round, Anamika survived by spelling "juvia" — a Brazil nut — and then had to sit through a tense 3 1/2-minute commercial before spelling the championship word.
