The Maryland department of Environment gives the reason of natural cause - “cold water stress” for the death of fishes. According to them, combination of rapid lowering of temperature and bulky population in the inadequately deep water level may be the cause of death. The temperature of sea surface was around 0.5 degrees Celsius in December that was recorded as coldest in 25 years as per data noted by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Bay Program. Spot juvenile fishes are susceptible to the cold and therefore they might not be able to stay alive in this very cold water of sea.

One of the causes for death may be water quality but the water quality is seemed to acceptable levels. So, cold winter killed fishes as per State officials. One can also charge pollution for this but there is no sufficient evidence found about it. This type of fish death was also occurred before in 1976 and 1980 but not as much as this extent. This mass killing has added one more puzzle for the Biologists as during some past time birds, crabs, and fish death have occurred in many places of world. Researchers are still trying to get the ground for this mass death to confirm conclusively that whether it is due to cold winter or else.
